Position Rank: Assistant Professor
The Department of Teaching & Learning invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the assistant level position with primary responsibilities including research and instruction in the area of writing and learning foundations. Duties include maintaining a strong research agenda in the area of writing—additional research focus in the area of learning theory or foundations of learning would be a plus, teaching writing courses in the undergraduate and graduate teacher licensure programs to prepare teachers for culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse classroom contexts, teaching doctoral courses/seminars in writing and foundations of learning; and developing research funding proposals. Applicants should have an earned doctorate in writing, reading, literacy, English/language arts, or related area, and demonstrated strong scholarship with a potential for further development. The applicant should possess a strong knowledge of methodologies used to study writing and learning processes in classroom and natural settings. The Department of Teaching and Learning of the University of Utah is interested in and values candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds and has a strong commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented candidates. This tenure-track appointment is on a nine-month schedule. Duties include maintaining a research agenda in the area of literacy; teaching reading courses in the undergraduate and graduate teacher licensure programs to prepare teachers for culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse classroom contexts; teaching doctoral seminars in reading and critical literacy-related areas; and developing research funding proposals. Applicants must have a doctorate in reading, literacy, English/language arts, or a related area. Preference will be given to the applicant with a background in educational foundations of reading, decoding, word recognition, phonology, spelling, or word-level reading processes; however, other areas of literacy will be considered. The applicant should possess a strong knowledge of methodologies used to study reading in classroom and natural settings and have demonstrated scholarship in reading and a commitment to improving reading achievement of culturally diverse students in urban settings.
