1. Application and Admission to the Graduate School
The PURPOSE OF ADMISSIONS is to secure a student body with the following general characteristics:
1. High intellectual ability
2. A serious interest in educational improvement
3. Good ability to express themselves in English, both orally and in writing
4. Diverse backgrounds and perspectives
This purpose determines the criteria the Graduate Committee considers when making admission decisions. The Committee will review, and applicants are urged to submit, any evidence relevant to these criteria.DECISIONS ON ADMISSION will be made the following semesters. All admission materials must be submitted by:
MARCH 1st - for Summer or Fall Semester
OCTOBER 15th - for Spring SemesterApplicants must state which semester they intend to begin their program at the time of application.
BASIC ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS for admission to the Master's program are:
1. A valid Bachelor's degree from an accredited University or College.
2. A 3.0 Grade Point Average in previous undergraduate work, on a 4.0 scale. Sometimes the average for the last two years only will be considered.
3. GRE Analytical Writing score. The GRE must have been taken within the last five years. The GRE should be taken no later than 6 weeks prior to department deadlines.
Requirements: A score of 4.5 or higher on the Analytical Writing section.
Registration: The GRE is offered Monday through Saturday. Call the Testing Center at 581-8744 for times and registration. You should register two months in advance. Scores are usually received in about 4-6 weeks.
Score Submission: At the time you take the test, please request that your scores be forwarded to our department by using university code 4853 and department code 3101 (for curriculum and instruction).
4. Previous or current teaching experience.
5. Students must submit ALL required materials in order to be reviewed for admission. However, students failing to meet the target GPA or test score listed in (2) or (3) above might still be admitted if they possess other skills, talents, or experiences that, in the judgment of the Department Graduate Committee, compensate for the more traditional academic requirements. Diverse cultural background or public school teaching experiences are two factors that could be considered.APPLICANTS NOT ADMITTED TO THE SEMESTER THEY ARE APPLYING MUST RE-APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL AND PAY THE RE-ADMISSION FEE.
The ADMISSION PROCESS occurs at two levels: the University level and the Department level. Different forms and data must be submitted to each. Students should submit materials at each level simultaneously.
1. University Level -- University of Utah Admissions Office
201 South 1460 East, Room 250 S
Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-9057A. File Application for Admission to Graduate School. Return the completed form to the University Admissions Office along with the admission fee of $45.00 ($65.00 for International Students). The University application should be filed at least 30-45 days before departmental deadline to allow for processing (no later than February 1st for Summer and Fall applications; no later than September 15th for Spring applications). Please indicate "Teaching & Learning " as the intended academic plan on this application.
B. Transcripts. Arrange for the Transcript Office of each college previously attended (other than the University of Utah) to send one official transcript directly to the University of Utah Admissions Office (see address above).
DO NOT SEND TRANSCRIPTS TO TEACHING & LEARNING.C. Students whose first language is not English are required to submit scores from the TOEFL exam. A minimum score of 600 is required. An official TOEFL score should be sent directly to the International Admissions Office.
** Once the Admissions Office has all of the above materials, your application and transcripts will be processed in their office, and a copy will be sent to Teaching & Learning. Our department must receive these materials by our deadline.
2. Department Level -
Department of Teaching & Learning
Graduate Programs
1705 East Campus Center Drive, Room 142
Salt Lake City, Utah 84112-9526A. Complete Departmental Application. This form describes your professional and educational background for the Committee.
B. Personal Statement. Included with the department application, you must submit a brief (2-3 pages) personal statement describing the kind of professional and academic studies you hope to undertake and your goals for this degree. The Departmental Admissions Committee pays close attention to this statement. Please prepare it with care and consideration. This statement should be typed and included as an attachment.
C. Three Letters of Recommendation. The letter of recommendation forms should be completed by people familiar with your academic interests and abilities. Letters from professors and professionals in a supervisory role are most influential. Forms should be mailed directly to the Department of Teaching & Learning using the address on the form.
* Letters should be on official letterhead from the organization with which the author is affiliated. Letters should also be typed and include complete contact information for the author.
* PLEASE NOTE: Family, friends, and religious advisors are considered inappropriate references since they cannot attest to the applicant's professional or academic qualifications.D. Test Scores. An official GRE Analytical Writing score should be forwarded to the department and must be received prior to admission deadlines. At the time of testing, please request that an official copy of your score is sent directly to our department.
E. Optional: A brief interview with a departmental faculty member, preferably the Director of the Graduate Program, is encouraged but not required. The student should use this interview to ask any questions he/she might have about specific courses and areas of study.
The above data will be considered by the Graduate Committee of the Department of Teaching & Learning, who will use their best professional judgment to reach decisions. All the evidence is considered together; there is no automatic minimum cutoff, and some factors may outweigh others in the judgment of the committee. A recommendation will be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office, where the University Graduate School will make the final decision and notify the student by mail.
2. Statement of Student Responsibility
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO SEE THAT ALL ADMISSION MATERIALS, INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS AND TEST SCORES, ARE IN THE ADMISSIONS FILE PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE.
THE DEPARTMENT OF TEACHING & LEARNING IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ADMISSION MATERIALS SENT TO THE WRONG ADDRESS, SUBMITTED LATE, OR NOT RECEIVED. YOU WILL NOT BE NOTIFIED PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE IF YOUR FILE IS INCOMPLETE; THEREFORE, PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE YOU SHOULD CHECK WITH THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM SPECIALIST OF THE DEPARTMENT TO SEE THAT YOUR MATERIALS HAVE ARRIVED. THE DEPARTMENT IS UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO REVIEW AN INCOMPLETE FILE, OR TO CONSIDER ANY MATERIALS ARRIVING AFTER THE DEADLINE.
3. Appeal Procedure
If you are not admitted you may submit an appeal in writing to the Director of Graduate Programs within two weeks of the date of the letter informing you of the committee decision. The only legitimate reason for granting an appeal is incorrect reporting of data or an oversight by the committee. Students may see their files (with the exception of confidential materials) in the presence of the Director of Graduate Programs, by appointment.
