What are the criteria for acceptance to a graduate teacher education program in early childhood, elementary education, or secondary education leading to a Master of Education degree?
The Department of Teaching and Learning uses a multi-factored approach in evaluating each applicant for admission. These factors include your cumulative undergraduate GPA (3.0 is recommended); the last two years of your undergraduate GPA (3.0 is recommended); your score on the Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing Skills Subtest of the Graduate Record Exam (a score of 4.5 or higher is recommended); and three letters of recommendation from individuals who are knowledgeable regarding your potential as a graduate student at the UofU and as a professional educator. Preferably, one of the three letters should be from someone who has observed you working with youth. Secondary education majors should submit one letter from a content area instructor. The Graduate Admissions Committee uses professional judgment in assessing the applicant's potential for success as a graduate student and professional educator. No single factor alone will determine acceptance or denial to the Graduate Program. Supplementary information may be requested from the applicant, such as additional written material and/or an interview with one or more committee members. Performance in graduate level coursework taken prior to admission may also be considered by the Admissions Committee.
As discussed above all prospective graduate students must take the Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing Skills Subtest of the Graduate Record Examination® (GRE®). This test measures critical thinking and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. For more information on the GRE Writing Test, contact your advisor (see above contact information) or go to GRE website http://www.ets.org/gre.
Secondary education students must also submit Praxis II test scores for their teaching content area. Please contact the Secondary Education Advisor for registration and minimum score requirements for this test.
Once admitted as a teaching major in early childhood, elementary education, or secondary education, what are the criteria that I must meet in order to be retained in Graduate School?
As a graduate student admitted to the UofU in early childhood, elementary education, or secondary education, you must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all coursework and field experiences throughout your graduate studies. You must also receive a minimum grade of C or above in any single course required for the teaching license. A student who does not meet the above cumulative GPA requirement will be given notification during the semester in which this criterion is not met and will have one additional semester to meet the GPA standard. A student who receives a grade of C- or below in a course that is required for a teaching license will have the opportunity to repeat the course one time.
