POLICIES GOVERNING COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS WITHIN THE

ELEMENTARY TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

Time Limit on Courses: The field of education is a changing profession. New evidence-based learning and changing classroom practice, as well as changes in the Utah State Office of Education Standards for teacher licensure, require that the University of Utah may modify the content of its courses and field experiences over time. To ensure that our students receive the most current information in the field of education, courses and field experiences that are more than five (5) years old may not be accepted toward admissions into the Elementary Teacher Education Program. See Elementary Education Advisor for more information.

Correspondence Courses: If a student wishes to take a teacher education course as a correspondence course, prior approval must be received from the Department of Teaching and Learning. Teaching and Learning 1010, EDPS 3110, Psych 1220, as well as selected Science courses taught online or as telecourses are exceptions to this policy.

Criteria for Retention in Teacher Education Program

Minimum Course Grade Requirements: Elementary Teacher Education Program courses (Professional Education and Elementary Specialization courses) must be completed with a grade of "C" or better (i.e., A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C) and must be taken for a letter grade, not under the University Credit/No Credit Option unless designated as a credit/no credit option. In cases where courses in the Elementary Teacher Education Program meet General Education and/or Bachelor s Degree requirements, students must complete courses with a "C" or better. Courses may only be repeated once.

Minimum GPA Requirement: Elementary majors admitted in their freshman or sophomore year must maintain a cumulative 2.50 GPA until they advance to their junior year. A 3.0 term by term GPA is required in all elementary education major courses during the junior and senior year of the bachelor's degree program. If a teacher candidate fails to meet the cumulative GPA requirement, he/she will be placed on scholastic probation and must contact the elementary education advisor prior to continuing in the elementary education program.

A student who does not meet the above criterion will receive notification from the Department of Teaching and Learning that he or she will have one additional semester to meet the GPA standard. A student who receives a "C-" or below in a licensure course may repeat the course one time in order to meet the standard.

Substitute Courses: If a course that is a requirement for the Elementary Teacher Education Program is not available, the Department of Teaching and Learning reserves the right to substitute course(s) to fulfill that requirement.

Transfer/Equivalent Courses: A formal request must be made by students to the elementary program advisor for course equivalencies for the Elementary Teacher Education Program by submitting course descriptions of the courses (when needed) and unofficial transcripts.

Licensure Program: All lower and upper division professional education core courses must be completed prior to registering for the Elementary Teacher Education specialization courses and field experiences during the senior year.

Course Offerings: Students are advised to meet regularly with the Elementary Education Advisor in the Department of Teaching and Learning to receive information on the most current course offering schedules.

Student Code: Information regarding violations of the student code, and appropriate student responses, will be placed in the student's file.

State Requirement for Student Teaching License (Must be approved prior to student teaching in the public schools) By legislative mandate, the Utah State office of Education requires that every teacher education candidate receive a student teaching license. The fee for this license $25 payable to the Utah State Office of Education. Students should sign up online at www.utah.gov/teachers and choose the third option, "Student Licenses". This is the same website that is used for the background check process. If students do not have cleared background check, the system will automatically send them to the fingerprinting portion of the site. If they have a cleared background, the system will allow them to sign up for a student teaching license. Students will need to print off the license and submit it to the Elementary Education Advisor in the Department of Teaching and Learning.

Criminal Conviction. Teacher licensure may be denied by the state of Utah because of a previous criminal conviction. You must contact the Associate Dean for Professional Education of the College of Education before proceeding with your program in teacher education if you have questions about your status. The Utah Professional Practices Advisory Committee, c/o Executive Secretary, State Office of Education, 250 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111, reviews all such cases.
