About the Department

The Department of Teaching and Learning has a strong commitment to excellence in research and teaching. Our curricular programs focus on preparing effective public school educators for today's schools by helping educators learn ways to address diverse student populations that have been traditionally underserved. Our programs promote lifelong learning, professional development, and preparation for those seeking careers as teachers, scholars, and academicians.

We offer pre-service programs in early childhood, elementary and secondary education. Our cohort structure allows small class size, small student to teacher ratio, a high degree of supervision and increased school experience for students in these programs.

Graduate programs include Master of Education, Master of Arts, Master of Science and Doctoral degrees in Reading.

Often M.Ed. programs are offered in a Cooperative or "co-op" setting. A co-op is a sequenced set of graduate courses, designed around a topic or need. Students involved in these programs generally go through their program with the same group of students, which provides a wonderful academic support structure. Recent co-op's foci have included reading endorsements, ESL endorsements, math and action research.

Currently the Department of Teaching and Learning serves approximately 30 doctoral students, 100 master's students and 200 undergraduate/licensure students.
