Welcome Message to SPED 5053/6053 Students!

Welcome to each of you who are officially enrolled in SPED 5053/6053. I am your instructor for the online Professional Skills Modules course which is offered by the University of Utah Department of Special Education. I look forward to working with you this semester to facilitate a successful online course experience.

Why is this course important? University students taking teacher preparation courses are required to apply the knowledge and skills learned in these modules directly to subsequent courses taught in the Special Education Department at the University of Utah . The professors in this department will expect you to apply the information you have learned to the assignments and activities in their courses.

Begin your course study the First Week of Current Semester Classes (refer to the University Academic Calendar at www.utah.edu). First, carefully read the information contained on this webpage ("Instructions to Begin Course"). Continue reading until you have read the entire page. Here you will find your start-up instructions and other important information, such as: instructor contact numbers, assignment due dates, and detailed instructions for completing this course.

Instructions to Begin the Course

First Step : Email instructor "First Week of Semester ."

Students officially enrolled in SPED 5053/6053 must email the instructor the information below during the First Week of the Semester (refer to Instructor Support section above for email address). Your email message will inform the instructor that you have initiated the course the first week as required. Send the following information by email:

•  Your full name : The name used to register for this course.

•  Daytime contact phone number : This contact number will be used only when necessary as an alternate contact number.

•  Type Your Full Name at the Top of every email to the instructor. By typing your full name at the beginning of your message, youwill facilitate quick identification of who you are to assist the instructor with prompt replies.

Second Step : Finish Skimming Through This Section (Instructions to Begin Course). Then Click and Read Overview of Modules

This section provides you with information about starting the course and completing the course requirements. The section “Overview of Modules” gives you a review of the scope of this course. It will provide you with an overview of the module content and objectives, required text, readings, and other important information about the modules before you begin studying each module.

Full-Access Necessary to Required Text (refer to Overview of Modules).

You must have full-access to the required text throughout this course (purchase text or borrow a copy for full-time use) to complete the Practice Exercises and Assignment for Module 1 and Module 3. You will also need the text for future courses with the Department of Special Education as a reference for writing research papers.

Third Step : Write Down Assignment Due Dates to Submit On-Time

Review the due dates for all module assignments to guide your study timeline. Refer to section below, Assignment Due Dates and Information, for Initial Due Dates, final deadlines, and submission requirements. Specific information about the content and requirements of the assignments will be provided with each module in the corresponding Lecture Information.

Please Note: Once you have submitted each of the Assignments by the Initial Due Date, you may resubmit assignments as many times as necessary to meet criteria until the Last Day of Current Semester Classes (Refer to the University Academic Calendar for specific dates at: www.utah.edu).

Fourth Step : To Begin Each Module, First Click and Study Lecture Transcript/Video, Then Complete Assignment.

Read the Module 1 Lecture Transcript (accompanied by Audio and Slides) before beginning the Assignment.

Once you have submitted the assignment for Module 1, begin Module 2 by reading the Lecture Transcript (accompanied by Slides only).

Once you have submitted the assignment for Module 2, begin Module 3 by viewing the Lecutre Video (accompanied by Slides Only).

It is strongly recommended that you complete the modules one-at-a-time and submit the assignment for each module before beginning the next one (Remember to note the due dates for the assignments and plan ahead in order to submit each assignment on-time.).

Directions for Studying Each Module


1. Review content outline and complete assigned readings . First review the Content Outline and complete the assigned Readings before studying the lecture transcript or video to enhance your learning experience. The content outline provides you with the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the scope of the material you will be covering. Assigned readings are provided to give you important background information for completing each module.

2. Study lecture information (slides with transcript, audio, and/or video). Before completing the practice exercises and assignments, study the lecture information (refer to recommendations below) to learn about key concepts and information from your assigned readings.

Recommendations for studying the module lectures:

•  Module 1: Lecture Transcript and Audio. Read the Lecture Transcript for a complete understanding of the module content. You can view it online and/or print a copy. It is also accompanied with an audio of the instructor's lecture.

•  Module 2: Lecture Transcript only. Read the Lecture Transcript for a complete understanding of the module content. You can view it online and/or print a copy.

•  Module 3: Lecture Video only. View the video of this lecture using Windows Media Player format or QuickTime format (It is not accompanied by a written transcript. )

Modules 1, 2, and 3: Lecture Slides. Each module is accompanied by a section providing lecture slides only to view online or printout. The slides are useful for a quick overview of the key points discussed in each lecture. Click each slide online if you wish to enlarge it for better viewing. (Refer to lecture transcripts (or video) for the complete lecture.)

3. Complete the Practice Exercises. It is recommended that you maximize your learning experience by engaging in the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills. Practice exercises are provided with Modules 1, 2, and 3 to give you an opportunity to apply the principles learned in each module. It is highly recommended that you take the time to complete each of the practice activities to maximize your learning. Instructions for these exercises are provided with each module. (Please DO NOT SUBMIT the Practice Exercises to the instructor as they are provided as learning activities only.)

4. Complete and submit assignments. Each module has one or more final assignments. Follow the directions provided with each module for completing and submitting assignments. (For more information, refer to the link on the homepage for " Assignment Due Dates and Information", as well as the link for each module).

5. Achieving Proficiency with the Knowledge and Skills taught in these modules requires you to (a) thoroughly complete each of the Practice Exercises provided with the modules, and (b) make a conscious effort to apply skills learned in this course to your own university coursework and/or teaching practice.

Assignment Due Dates and Information

General Information

Assignments will be introduced with each corresponding module. Specific information about the content of the assignment and the requirements will be provided below with any additional assignment information located in the Lecture Information accompanying each Module. If you have any questions about the requirements for the modules assignments, please contact the instructor (refer to Instructor Support & Accommodations on the homepage).

Receiving Course Credit

"Pass" required for each assignment. Students must officially enroll in this course to have assignments graded by the instructor and to receive university credit (credit/no-credit). Participation is required in the full online course and activities to complete course requirements. Students must receive a "pass" for each assignment.

No incompletes. Students must successfully complete all requirements for the three modules or re-register for the course in a subsequent semester. No incompletes will be given for this course.

Final deadline. The final completion date for assignments and assignment resubmissions to receive course credit is the Last Day of Current Semester Classes (Check the University Academic Calendar for the specific date at: www.ed.utah.edu). Teacher education candidates will receive credit for the course when the session is completed and the student has received sign-off by the program advisor.

Directions for Assignment Submissions

Submit assignments in email message (not as attachment). Submit to the instructor in your email message. Please do not submit assignments as email attachments. It is the responsibility of each student to keep a copy of all submitted assignments in order to complete resubmissions, or in the event the assignment must be resent due to electronic failure. The instructor will not return assignments to students.

Resubmitting assignments. All graded assignments may be resubmitted as many times as necessary to meet criteria until the Last Day of Current Semester Classes (Check the University Academic Calendar for the specific date at: www.utah.edu). Students are strongly advised to resubmit each assignment as soon as possible to allow time for grading and further resubmissions when necessary.

Email feedback from the instructor. The instructor will check email for assignments at 12:00 noon on Mondays. All assignments received by noon on Monday will receive feedback by the following Saturday/Sunday. The instructor will respond to student email questions and phone messages throughout the week.

Anticipate instructor feedback for every assignment submission. Students will receive feedback from the instructor on all submitted assignments as "Pass" or "Resubmit." If you Do Not receive an email reply from the instructor on the status of each submitted assignment by the following Saturday/Sunday, please contact the instructor as there may have been a problem with email transmissions as sometimes occurs.

Submission. Submit assignment in an email message (not an email attachment) to the instructor:
1. First, list the 2-4 key elements in your statement.
2. Then, type your philosophy statement. Maximum length 200-400 words.

Ninth Monday of the current semester.

Description:

Conduct an electronic library search for six references (2 books, 2 journals, 2 internet webpages) on an assigned special education topic. You must locate your 6 references on at least 3 of the following electronic sources: (a) library catalog, (b) ERIC, (c) PsycInfo, (d) Education Full Text, and (e) internet web sources. Refer to the Module 3 Assignment link above for further details.

Criteria:

All required electronic reference sources must be present. Students may resubmit a corrected test as many times as necessary to meet criteria until the Last Day of Current Semester Classes. Check the University Academic Calendar for the date of the last day of classes at www.utah.edu. Students are strongly advised to turn-in all resubmissions as soon as possible to allow time for grading and further resubmissions when necessary.
