Message from the Dean

Education is the essential profession. It makes every other profession possible. A career in education is all about making a difference, whether it is the new graduate with a bachelor's degree teaching 2nd graders who works collaboratively with reading, language, math, and arts education specialists or a career educator with a new master's degree facilitating innovative approaches for instruction, school reform, and school organization. In our Utah communities, across the nation, and around the world, graduates of the College of Education at the University of Utah shape lives for a better tomorrow.

As the dean of a college with a proud past and a bright future, I am honored to carry on the best of this tradition working with an internationally recognized faculty. We are educating our students to become the highest quality teachers, educational leaders, school psychologists, and counselors. We are proud of our role as leaders in the development of new knowledge and innovative programs that will take Utah and this country into an exciting new era. The challenges are many, the opportunities are endless.

In keeping with our focus on innovative teacher education in a changing world, we have developed an exciting new research-based program focused on preparing educators for 21st century schools. This program integrates arts, sciences, and academic learning as it helps shape teachers who are culturally competent and responsive to the needs of their communities. This new teacher education program reflects the vision of the University of Utah to attract and retain a diverse faculty of the highest quality who have the desire and responsibility to provide mentoring, coursework, and field experiences that are rigorous and relevant for successful careers in education.

The College of Education is moving into a new era, one that will prepare the highest quality teachers and educational leaders, celebrate diversity, and advance research in education. In fact, our faculty and students comprise one of the most ethnically diverse Colleges of Education in the country. Together, we are continually developing new and exciting outreach programs to the communities of Utah, the nation, and the world. Our vision is to make a real and lasting difference in the life of every student we touch through a nationally respected, talented, and committed faculty. It is a dynamic vision of opportunity and transformation in education. We invite you to join us as we move forward together.

As a college in Utah's flagship institution, our faculty, in partnership with the community, families, public education and University of Utah colleagues, are actively promoting education as the single most critical investment this state and nation can make in its future.

I hope you will consider investing in the extraordinary people and innovative programs in the College of Education with a gift of $25, $50, $100, or even more! You'll have a tremendous sense of satisfaction, knowing that you are helping to prepare the next generation of educators for our children.
